"Tai Chi is based on a number of principles of movement and principles of energy. In order to have these principles reflected in the Tai Chi form, proper warm up is necessary. Conversely, as the Tai Chi principles are learned and ingrained within the form, and everyday movement, it's possible and necessary to integrate Tai Chi principle into the warm up. So, one of the most basic Tai Chi principles is what's called Pung. Pung is an expansive energy. It's the energy of opening, energy that is outward, as I said, expansive. It's the exact opposite of collapse. So, Tai Chi should be filled with energy through the entire body, and that energy should be reflected in the Tai Chi warm ups. In order to see the Pung energy coming out through the body in the warm ups, one will want to feel the energy coming into their fingertips, coming through all parts of the body, opening up the joints. As one warms up, one can think of these principles in order to get more benefit out of one's warm ups."
