"MICHAEL LEWIS: Michael Lewis here with the Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts on behalf of Expert Village. We are going to go over today a few break falls and throws that we use in jiujitsu. Osoto gari is a basic jiujitsu throw. It means outer reaping leg throw because you are going to the outside of the leg and reaping it out as you throw the person down. We are going to start from formal position. It is where he is going to place his right hand up on to my shoulder, I place my left hand on the bottom part of his uniform top and I place my right hand on his shoulder and he places his left hand on the bottom. Now keep in mind that the person that you are throwing, their foot position dictates your throw. Do not force them in to a throw. So if he steps across his center line, I would not be able to throw him in osoto gari. So, if he steps straight forward and does not step across the center line, he stays on the right side of his body, what I do is I take a step with my left leg and push him back with my shoulder. From here, I have him off balanced so that he will be able to fall back even if I just let him go. Well, if that is not enough, I want to take out that legs. So I take my right leg, step behind, kick it out and he throws, again, watching the break fall. He has practiced plenty of times and he has gotten comfortable with the break fall and is able to execute a great break fall. So again, we will show, we will speed it up just a little bit. I am grabbing on in formal position. I step in, bump him off balance, throw him down. And that is your osoto gari, which is outer reaping leg throw."
