Series Summary

Jujutsu is a Japanese martial art consisting primarily of grappling techniques. The word itself means “art of softness” and focuses on using an opponent's energy against him. Jujutsu was developed in feudal japan to disarm or overtake armed opponents when weapons were impractical or forbidden. The Olympic sport Judo, and Brazilian Jui Jitsu were both developed based on multiple schools of Japanese Jujutsu. Jujutsu utilizes an array of different attacks including throwing, trapping, joint locking, holds, gouging, biting, disengagements, striking, and kicking.

In this free video series, our expert Michael Lewis will teach you all about Jujutsu throws and chokes. He will show you how to stay loose to aid your technique, and how to fall without hurting yourself. He will show you how to do an osoto gari throw, a tao toshi throw, and how to defend against a bull charge. He will even show you how to do a couple of head and hip throws, but the most important lesson he has to teach you is how to stay safe during your training exercises.

"MICHAEL LEWIS: Michael Lewis here with the Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts on behalf of Expert Village. We are going to go over today a few break falls and throws that we use in jiujitsu. Just to sort of show you a little bit about the parts of jiujitsu, the throws are pretty much the base of jiujitsu, falling, being able to roll, all those sorts of things. They are sort of the basis of your jiujitsu. To sort of define a throw, it is pretty much anything that is going to put somebody down to the ground. They are standing up, they throw a punch at you , you deflected out of the way and the tripped off their feet or they take in, they are rushing at you and you are able to step out of the way. Pretty much, when you are using a throw, it is not about using brute force against that person. It is all about going with the flow of their energy, in other words, the path of least resistance. You are not going to resist them at all. You are going to go with the flow and allow them, use their own body weight to throw themselves over. And so that is pretty much a summary of what we are going to show you with the jiujitsu throws."
