"MICHAEL LEWIS: Michael Lewis with the Yeshua Ryu Martial Arts on behalf of Expert Village. We are talking today about inboard wrist locks, how to apply them, and how to use them for your self defense. Safety is key when you are training in jujutsu with any technique, whether it be a throw, a wrist lock or arm bar or whatever it may be. Just for example, when you are applying a technique, you want to do it in a very smooth fashion, no jerky movements, nothing that would jerk around his wrist too much, possibly causing injury or breaking his wrist. You want to be very smooth. You want both training partners to be comfortable in the techniques that you are applying. He needs to be able to feel the technique and feel how it is being applied to his wrist just as much as I need to learn how to apply the technique to him, because he will be learning also how to apply this technique. So when I flip it over, I do it nice and smooth, I apply slow pressure, and then he taps, and that tapping lets me know that is as far as his flexibility will allow him to go and that is enough pain for him so he taps, and I am able to immediately let loose his wrist so that nobody gets injured. And as you get more comfortable, you'll be able to speed that up, especially if you are working with the same training partner day in and day out, you will be able to get more comfortable with that person and be able to apply the techniques a lot quicker. Also, on top of tapping and the control and the speed, you also have to keep in mind the general flexibility of the person and also their pain tolerance. Some people have a very high pain tolerance and may not tap and they are getting very close to possibly injuring their wrist and they may not even realize it. Also, those people who have flexibility; you may be able to twist their wrist in so much that they may be coming close to possibly breaking their wrist also, so something else to also be very aware of when you're applying your techniques."
