Hapkido martial arts originated with a group of Korean Nationals led by Choi Yong Sul in the mid-1900's. The primary aim of Hapkido is self-denfense, and so practitioners focus mainly on countering attacks of other martial arts, as well as common unskilled attacks. Hapkido combines many fighting techniques, including aikido and taekwondo, though the main purpose of engagement is to get near enough to ones opponent for a close strike or throw. Using circular motion and non-resisting movement, Hapkido practitioners gain advantage of their opponents using footwork and body positions. In fact, the phrase Hapkido is usually translated as “the way of coordinating energy”.
Hapkido practitioners train with a range of weapons including dan bongs, fans, ropes and swords. In this free video, Master David Herbert employs his 36 years of experience to explain and demonstrate a variety of Hapkido weapons. Using a wide range of striking and pinning techniques, Master Herbert shows how to use different weapons in combination with traditional Hapkido tactics for self-defense against an enemy attack. He demonstrates basic tips and techniques for the Hapkido dagger, long staff, rope stick and other common weapons, as well as providing step-by-step instructions for self-defense against opposing weapon attacks.
"On behalf of Expert Village my name is Master David Herbert the World Martial Arts in New York City and today I will be demonstrating some of the basic hapkido weapons. In hapkido we have 5 basic weapons categorizes we have short, medium, long, flexible and projectile. Short would be like a dagger, a fan, a short stick. Medium would be a cane, a middle staff or a sword. Long would be staff or spear or sword spear. Flex would low stick or rope or chain, whip and projectile would be throwing darts, dagger, throwing knives. Once you have the 5 basic groups they do end up blossoming to other groups also cause they are combination of weapons also and that consist of like knife and club. Staff and throwing darts."
