"Hello! My name is Marc Zee, here from Arizona Center of mixed martial arts. I’m here to demonstrate the knee bar utilized in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Go ahead guys. Alright. Okay. What they’re going to start off in is what’s called a half guard position. Half guard position is where one leg is through the legs and crossed over this leg. The reason why it’s called half guard is because it only utilizes one leg around the hips. If it was full guard, what we’ve been using, both legs would be around the hips. What he’s also using here is what’s called a knee separation, it’s knee bar. What it does is it expands the knee joint, separates it, and breaking it. What he’s going to do is going to shut the shoulder over his head, he’s going to reach back and grab the opponent’s ankle. What’s key with this knee bar is the shin needs to be in the pit of the knee. If you notice this shin right here, needs to be as deep into the knee as possible, giving it the maximum amount of leverage as possible. So from there, he grabs on to the ankle and he pulls it like a slot machine breaking the knee. Start again. He’s in the half guard position. He shucks the arm, reaches back, grabs the ankle, makes sure his shin is as deep into the knee as possible, and pulls it separating the knee, this breaking it. One more time guys. Half guard position, shucks the arm, reaches back, grabs the ankle. Make sure the shin is deeply into the pit of the knee pulls the shin, separates the knee. That’s the knee bar."
