on 8/2/2008 Isosceles means a triangle with 2 sides of equal length, therefore your arms are of equal length as you are square to your target. As you point out its not the most advantageous position in that it does not allow for easy movement. It is the most stable of all modern stances.

"Okay, the second form or stance we're going to talk about is isosceles. Isosceles I believe means triangle. Again, I equated earlier to a 70s cop show Starsky and Hutch where the guys will come out with their guns, stand flat footed and they will level off. This platform is stable, but it could be counter productive. Depending upon the situation you're in. If you're in close quarters. If you're just on a range and you're target practicing it may be fine but again, it's your preference what to shoot is comfortable with. This time what I'm going to do is I'm going to demonstrate the isosceles stance. Again, feet shoulder width apart, slightly bent at the knees. When I draw my weapon I'm coming straight out in front of myself, so I'm not slightly turning my body as in the weaver because I'm not bladed. With the weaver I was bladed so I kind of turn slightly this way. With the isosceles, I'm square with my target or what I'm aiming at. Unfortunately, it make myself a larger target. This is the isosceles where I punch it out and I'm right here. It has a very stable base. Again, I would lean slightly forward at the waist, bring it in back. But again, if I had to react, if I got charged I'm off balance. That's one consideration that it's a stable shooting platform, but it could be unstable if it came to defensive tactics where you had to move in a hurry and get out of there. This would be considered the isosceles stance."
