Step 1
You need to download and install Camstudio. The direct link of the software is in resource section of this article. It is fairly straight forward installation.
-
Step 2
Open Camstudio. Navigate through different menu and buttons. Most basic ones are Record, Pause and Stop. (Check out video for more details.)
-
Step 3
Camstudio can store the video either in SWF (Flash file) or AVI file. Click on SWF button to switch between AVI and SWF. I prefer to store screen capture videos as AVI, as it is easy to play in media players in computer.
-
Step 4
You can choose region to screen capture, can have fixed region or can also capture entire computer screen.
-
Step 5
You can enable or disable audio capturing as well from Options menu. There are many more options you can configure.
-
Step 6
To configure video, go to options and Video options. Here you can configure which video compressor, camstudio should use. If you are not sure about it, you can leave it to default setting which is ‘Microsoft Video 1’.
-
Step 7
There are many more options, you can navigate and check them out. However, for simple video capturing, you don’t have to know all of them. Simply, start recording and Stop whenever you are done. (You can pause along the way, if the video is too long, to reduce the size of video file). When you stop, it will ask for location where you want to save file.
-
Step 8
You can upload this AVI file to Youtube or any video sharing sites.

on 6/24/2008 I didn't realize this was a freebie. I used to use Camtasia all the time. Thanks.
