"This is a ten minute, everything that you'd like to know about charts. This is a chart of the San Francisco Bay. One of the first thing you'll notice looking at the nautical chart is the blue and the white. San Francisco Bay really isn't that deep. All this blue area in here is twenty feet or less. The white is actually the deep water where the ships come in. You see a channel through here. This is where all the commercial vessels come into San Francisco Bay and then they split off through this channel up toward Richmond or the channel down here toward Oakland. You can see channels into Richmond here in the white, the deep water dredge channels, and the channel into Oakland down here. Other things you will notice on the chart are the compass roses. This is where you can figure out your compass headings for your navigation problems or if you want to know what heading to take from two different points. Down here you'll see these oval, like race tracks, and these circles. These are actually anchorages for our deep water vessels. You'll also notice that there are purple, they look like teardrops sitting in here. These are all buoys, so this buoy, each buoy is marked with a color, red or green, so R or G, the number and then it's flash sequence so you can identify it at night. Each one of the buoys flashes differently. If it has a bell that's marked also. Everyone of them is identified so at night you can look at your chart, you can check the flash, then you can check it against your chart and know which buoy it is."
