" My name is Kevin Winsley. I’m with Offshore Sailing School and I’m going to talk a little bit about how to jibe a sailboat here on Expert Village. Jibing is going from a broad reach where you’re off the wind and you’re going to change tacts going down wind. Just before you get into the jibe you want to have the main sail just blanket the jib a little bit, I think if you watch here you will see the jib just partially collapsed, there it goes, then we haul it across and give the command of preparation, prepare the jibe and on that the crew will pre jibe the jib, so they’ll pull the jibe into middle of the boat. The main sail will start coming to the middle of the boat and the helm can transition across the boat and so maintain your course, when the crew is ready you then give the command of execution which is jibe ho, slow turn down wind, jib comes across and then soon after that the main sail and on a windy day like today you want to make sure the main sail goes out nice and quickly."
