Hello, my name is Kevin Winsley and I’m with Offshore Sailing School and now on Expert Village. What I’m going to do is show you how to tie a cleat hitch and a cleat hitch is something that you might use to secure your boat to the dock. So Jill, if I can ask you to act a little bit like a boat and put some tension on this line for me and what we want to do here then is take the line that we’re going to tie to the dock over to the cleat. We want to run the line initially to the nearest side and the furthest horn. So it goes this way around the cleat, not that way, so we look for nearest side furthest horn to the load, come around, go around both ends, then we start to crossover making like a figure 8 and then the tricky bit is to put the hitch in. When we put the hitch in we want to twist over like that and have the two lines underneath run parallel. Some people talk about this as having one bridge and two rivers. As long as the line is underneath lie parallel there you have a nice cleat hitch.
