" Hello, my name is Kevin Winsley and I’m with Offshore Sailing School and now on Expert Village I’m going to show you how to tie a clove hitch and a clove hitch is a knot you might use to secure a fender to a rail on the side of a boat. So we take the tail end of the line and we go to our rail and come around underneath the rail and then as you come around what you want to do is cross over the standing lines. So I have come around I cross over, I carry it around the rail and just tuck back in through here. So we see this one line crosses the two that are underneath. Now some schools recommend that we use the clove hitch for fenders. That’s okay for a short period of time. However it’s a knot, though if it’s constantly worked it can come undone. So what we like to do is just stick in an additional two half hitches to finally secure the knot. So there’s one half hitch and then carry on going around the same way and we tie another half hitch and there you go. You can go home and rest assured that your fender will stay attached."
