" Welcome to Expert Village in learning how to sail. Hi! my name is Doug Sparks with Offshore Sailing and today we’re going to start you a wonderful journey in the world of sailing, whether your aspirations are America’s Cup Racer or whether you dreamt about cruising the world’s oceans. The foundation for whatever you decide to do in the world of sailing begins with learning how to sail and today with us your instructor Kevin Winsley. Kevin… Thank you Doug. Yes depending on what kind of sailing that you’re thinking of getting into whether you’re going to be cruiser or a racer, high performance type sailor, there’s a common thread that goes through all of it and that is just really understanding how sailboat work. Once you get a basic understanding about small boat for example that then relates right up the line, so if you want to be an America Cup Racer then starting on a very small boat such as dinghy. Dinghies are fun, it’s kind of windy today for example dinghies have the tendency to perhaps capsize occasionally and that’s the part of the fun of actually being in a dinghy better thing to may be start with is in a keelboat. I’ll be talking about in class how the keel keeps the boat upright and stops it from sliding side ways, but a nice small keelboat like Colgate 26 a nice day sailor is a great platform to starting to sail and behind me over here we have the Colgate 26 is. I’ll be taking you guys out this morning and with this breeze we have today we’ll see just how the boat can perform."
