"Hi, I’m Kate I’m here with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of Expert Village and we’re going to talk about hiking today. We’ll be talking about compasses and GPS’s. You don’t necessarily need to have both or either if you’re going for a short hike. This isn’t a lesson on how to use either one. If you have a GPS and if you’re very well familiar with it and you know how to use it and you know how to orient it to your map, you should use that and check often as you go. This will only last as long as a battery, so if you’re planning on using just a GPS for a 10 day expedition, you should bring extra batteries or bring a back up compass and know how to use both. Compasses are pretty light weight, much lighter than this and a little bit easier to use if you’ve used them before. There’s always a magnifying glass, you can orient yourself north and you should orient it with the map when you get out right as you start on the trail. It’s pretty extensive process to learn how to use your compass throughout the whole backpacking experience, so takes some time and you need to get familiar with it. If you’re in a more remote area, it’s very important to have either a GPS or a compass with you because you could get lost and you need to find your way out. If you’re in a more traveled area, it still would behoove you to have a compass or a GPS with you. Sometimes a map can get you through it, we recommend using one or the other, GPS or compass."
