"Hello! I'm Jordan Pederson for Expert Village. We're going to visit a little bit today about safety and cougar and bear country and taking care of your food when camping. Many of the problems that caused by bears are first caused by people in the careless handling of food, leaving it out where bears can get it. Bears like human food very much. Obtaining human food one time can cause a bear to become a habitual problem. We have a saying in the bear business. A fed bear is a dead bear. We've tried to transplant them and move them. Sometimes it works. Many times it doesn't, and the bear has to be destroyed or put down. So by carelessly handling food while you're on a camping trip, a picnic, or out in the woods can cause a bear to lose it's life. We'd like to show you how to take care of your food and save a bear. Some bears have learned that ice chests have food in them. They will key in on these. Leaving a ice chest out on a table while you're off on a fishing trip or sight seeing or leaving your camp unattended with food on the table, ice chests out can cause real problems for bears. They come in, they tear things apart, they obtain food and they learn this is an easy way to get food. Bears sleep for 6 months and they're awake for 6 months. While they're awake, they're trying to get food so that they can sleep for 6 months. Please put all your food away at night, or if you leave your campsite during the day. Lock your food in your trunk or in your car and we won't have any problems with bears obtaining human food. "
