" Hi! My name is Julio Anta from Anta’s Fitness & Self Defense in Miami, Florida. My website is www.antakungfu.com. Continuing with the Southern Kung Fu, there is something very important that I need to specify. We see in the martial arts…We are going to be working the reverse punch, but in explanation, how the reverse punch is done in our system. In our system, yes we have drills that we…but we don’t believe in leaving our fist out. The only reason that in ancient China, we did this and left that out was to stop for your instructor to look at your alignment. That your shoulder is relaxed and not tight. That your elbow was not hyperextended and it was down, your knuckles are aligned. So really, a reverse punch is like a jab, like a boxer’s jab, in and out, but with the elbow down. Why the elbow down? If we turn like this, it is easy for an aikido guy or a guy that does Chi Gong, which is part of Kung Fu, to break your elbow, take you down. It slows down your punch when you leave it out. Remember we never punch from here. The reason this was developed was to teach you correct alignment for your instructor to look when you did forms. In our forms, we do have moves that we hold it. We do have moves that come here, but it is all for instructional purpose. A correct punch should be fast like a bullet and come in faster than it goes out. "
