" Hi! My name is Julio Anta from Anta’s Fitness & Self Defense in Miami, Florida. My website is www.antakungfu.com. This is Southern Kung Fu. What I want to demonstrate now is your basic front kick, very similar to any other martial art, just a slight different. We don’t curl our toes back because we wear shoes. In most fights, you’re not going to have time to take your shoes off unless you are in the beach or at home. So the way we could do it is it is a front like kick, actually, we practice high but we never kick higher than the waist, because if we do a fast high kick, your low kick will be fast. We try not to telegraph the shoulder, we point the toes. If I am kicking his groin, I am going to point my toes and slap him on my instep, which relaxes my tibia and makes my kick a little faster. If I am going to kick his stomach I am going to use my heel. So with the front leg, the opponent comes out to me and I do a quick snap to the groin, bends him over, I followthrough and attack. Or I can do a back leg kick if I needed a little bit more power, but to the groin I really do not need power, and back. A lot of times, as I showed earlier you might be in a cat stance, somebody attacks you, and you can move to the side, kick him. And you don’t have to kick high, you kick low because if he is trying to sweep you he is bending forward and he has got his head bent. Now, quick basics of a front kick, just like any martial arts, chamber, kick, recoil back, just snap it fast, bring it in faster than it goes out."
