"Hi! I’m Kate and I’m with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of expertvillage.com. I am going to talk to you about hiking and backpacking. When you are backpacking, you generally like to have a leave no trace policy. This goes for pretty much everything you do that day starting off by staying on the trails as you hike and not going off of them and making your own trails. Using designated campsites if you are in an area that has designated campsites. You want to put the least amount of impact on the environment as possible to leave it as pristine as possible for the future. When you are at a spot if there is a designated campsite area, you should use it. If you are in an area and you want a campfire and there isn’t a campfire spot, you have to use a fire pen. This can be as simple as a metal trashcan cover and you have to bring it in with you. Any trash, anything you use, you are packing it out so everything you bring in, you are bringing back out with you. Even brushing your teeth instead of spitting your toothpaste all in one concentrated area, just take a big gulp of water with it and spit it in as many different directions as you can. When you are cooking, you don’t want to leave food scraps lying around and in any gray water, you should dig a hole away from your campsite to put all of the gray water in. All of these things help preserve the environment and help make it a better place for everybody else to come and enjoy camping and backpacking. So keep all those things in mind and if you have any questions about it, you can go to leave no trace website, lnt.org. "
