"Hi! I’m Kate with Zoar Outdoor on behalf of expertvillage.com. I am going to talk to you about hiking and backpacking. When planning your multi day trip, you are going to want to have a continuous thought on water sources. Before I leave my trip, I always look at the map and determine where I am hiking to see if there is a river that is going to be there or ponds and possibly streams. Depending on the time of the year it is, some streams might not be there if it is in the middle of summer. When you camp and you are having fires, you also want to know where water sources are easily accessible. Any time you are doing a camp fire even if it is on a fire pen, you need to be able to have water near by. You should plan your evening stops and your campsites where there is water 200 yards from your campsite and that is pretty far away but as long as you have running water, you can purify it and you can use it for cooking, drinking and for everything else. Water is a very critical part. Canyons, you are going to have to keep that in mind. Any where else in the nation, you are also going to have to keep that in mind. Maps have a really good source to find water. Ponds, rivers, little tributaries might not be there but if it’s a big river, you should be pretty good to have water there year round. "
