"Hi, this is Jerry Selzter from the International Roller Derby League for Expert Village. The vast majority of roller derby participants are unpaid. Most actually spend money on the sport via purchasing their own equipment and paying dues to support their own leagues. Teams usually practice several times a week and injuries are common. So why pay money to work, compete, and possibly get hurt? Well, it takes a while to relearn how to skate, and also safety issues. So, safety is key to roller derby. Knee pads are essential, elbow pads, arm pads, and of course a mouth guard, and proper skates for roller derby. And we can't forget about your helmet. In the old days, they did not wear a helmet. Now helmets are a key factor to safety."
