Video: The Beginning of How to Stand Up on a Surf Board

Hi, I’m John Hickey with Florida Surf Lessons. You can reach us at www.floridasurflessons.com. We are based out of Central and South Florida. Now I am going to elaborate more on the popping up part. This is going to be steps one and two and a little bit more further in-depth. So we are laying down on the board. Now you got your hands inside. Now when you are pushing up one thing you do not want to do is you don’t want to push up and stretch your back because if you arch that back too much that is going to be a lot of stress on your lower back and you may be feeling it later on that day. If you continue to do that you will continue to have back problems later. So what you want to do is give a half-way push. So you are not bending too far. When you are pushing up and bringing your back leg forward what you can do is you can get comfortable. So lay here. If you don’t feel comfortable bringing that leg all away around, slide back a little bit on the board. Notice how I am not picking up my hands off the board, they are flat on the board but I am getting my weight underneath. Now that enables me to get my balance set and get ready for the next wave.
