Series Summary

The game of disc golf, also called Frisbee golf, D-Golf, and frolf is very similar to traditional golf, only played with flying discs rather than clubs and golf balls. Its origins date back almost 100 years, but modern disc golf developed in the 1960s around the UC Berkley campus. Today there are thousands of disc golf courses across the globe, and it continues to gain popularity as fun and affordable (usually free) outdoor recreation.

In this video series our expert Patrick Kitten offers you all the basic information you need to know to get started playing the game of disc golf, including the types of discs and accessories you’ll need, various throwing techniques, and the basic rules and how to keep score. He even offers tips and advice about competing in tournaments, which you should be ready for by the time you finish these free lessons!

Video Transcript

"The Frisbee actually just celebrated its fiftieth birthday last year. Started from pie pans and now here we have space age plastic that just goes unbelievable distances. You know in the last ten years disc golf has been growing exponentially. A lot of the Frisbees that are used today are nothing like the Frisbees that started with. A lot of the distances of I believe, the distance record ten years ago was like four hundred and seventy feet. The distance today is nine hundred and forty two feet. So, it?s a big leap in disc golf. A lot of people like to call it Frisbee golf but Frisbee is a trademark name. And, its disc golf. Or, as the kids in Montana they call it, they call it frolf. Anyways, I believe there's over three thousand courses nationally. I know its Sweden's national sport. It's huge in Japan. It's becoming a world sport. Hopefully some day we'll have an Olympic Games."
