"Hi! I’m Jim Dowd with Zoar Outdoor. I’m here on behalf of expertvillage.com to talk with you about fly casting and fly fishing. When we discussed the 4 part cast, we spoke about the necessity of starting slow with a smooth speed up to an abrupt pop stop. Well here’s a tool that was devised by McCallie Lord and published in his L.L. Bean introduction to fly casting. It is marvelous, vivid and it really works. It is using a cup of water, about an inch of water and you just mimic the stroke. Start slow, smoothly accelerate and stop. If the water goes out straight, it will emulate the line. This really works, so try it. About an inch of water in the cup, slowly accelerate and stop. If the water goes out flat straight in front of you, you’ve done it right. That’s exactly the motion you need to do in order to pop stop and cast a nice straight smooth fly line. "
