"In this clip, we're going to talk about environmental awareness and being safe when you go out kayaking. The first thing you want to do is always let someone know where you're going and when to expect you back. Next, check the weather. Go online, listen to the radio or catch the newspaper and check the marine environment channel. That's going to give you the wind speed and direction and water temperature which your local news channel may not give you. Next, check your tides. Are they coming in or going out? Is the wind going to be blowing against the tide or with the tide? All of these will impact your day on the water. Some other things to be aware of are the local hazards. For instance, the wildlife. Sting rays, horseshoe crabs, oysters, crab cages we have here in Florida, you want to be aware of those. Then there's boaters, jet skiers. So you want to have a full 360 when you're paddling. Be aware. Pay attention. Those are keywords to being safe on the water."
