Series Summary

Mixed Martial Arts kickboxing, normally associated with cage fighting, blends many different fighting forms including: Muay Thai kickboxing, Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, and Wrestling. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has gained in popularity since the first Ultimate Fighting Championship won by Royce Gracie. It is so popular it will soon become an Olympic Event, and was actually set to be included in the 2004 games but lost its place at the last minute. MMA fighters have historically trained in a specific martial art such as Muay Thai Boxing or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu before combining the techniques; however, students have begun to train specifically for MMA with other students and a variety of trainers. If you would like to learn Mixed Martial Arts self-defense techniques, learn from one of our experts.

One area of the real world in which martial arts is particularly useful is in self-defense. Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Jason Jeannette with Elite Martial Arts of Middle, Tennessee, here on behalf of Expert Village. Alright, I'm here with one of our training partners, Kevin Stewart, and he's going to help us run through some empty hand versus club or empty hand versus knife defense. The knife defense, we'll address first. It will be mainly stationary type of threat with a knife, knife to the throat, head lock from behind, hostage-type of positions. Dynamic. We'll do a couple of dynamic defense against a knife, just way more dangerous. With the stick, we can get away with a little more with the club. The club is a little bit easier to get control of to kind of wrap up your attacker and/or turn and run like I'd want to with a knife. If I know someone has a knife, I'm not defending against a knife unless I absolutely have to take care of another person to keep the knife away from somebody else. Otherwise, I'm turning on my heels and running. But the empty hand versus stick, we'll get a little bit more courageous with. We'll talk about different ranges as we're going."
