Video: How to Ride a Surf Board

As we're walking on the beach, I'm warning to do the sting ray shuffle. The sting ray shuffle is to shuffle your feet in the sand to scare off any stingrays that might be waiting for you to step on. If you step on them, they have a tail that stings you, so Sean keep doing the sting ray shuffle. I have now instructed to lay on his board and to lay down and to paddle out into open sea. As you can see, he's laying on the center of the board, paddling straight out to the open ocean where all the other surfers are sitting. There's a wave approaching Sean so I'm telling Sean to turtle dive. A turtle dive is a turtle dive like a turtle. You're going to grab the board with your arms and your legs and you're going to turn it over and you're going to hold it above you as say the wave goes over you. As the wave goes over you, you're going to turn over and you're going to get back on the board. This is the easiest way to turtle dive a long board. There's other ways to duck dive. If you have a short board, you just duck dive with the knee and it pushes you under, but we can't do that right now. Keep turtle diving. I have Sean out there sitting on the board and I'm teaching him to sit in the center with your feet dangling off either side, your hands on the side for balance. Teaching him how to spin 360s on either direction. Doing this is spinning with your hands, using your hands to spin 360 so you can face the direction you want to take off on. As you can see Sean, he's laying on his board facing the beach ready to catch his first wave. I push him, I tell him to stand up. As you can see, he's trying to stand up and he's falling down. From a wipe out, as you can see, can be very dangerous so make sure you want to protect your head when coming back up to the surface from your boards slamming back down on the water. Other than that, grab your board and do everything from step one to get out into the ocean again to turtle diving to spinning 360 with your hands and you legs so you can face the beach. Lay on your board and paddle towards the beach to stand up.
