When you are hunting ducks you want to be real careful at knowing what ducks are that you are shooting at. Being able to identify drakes and hens, that's a given because a lot of times you will want to shoot those drakes and leave the hens so they can repopulate so knowing how to identify a drake is really important. If you are hunting mallards obviously you are looking for the green head, the dark head on the duck. you want to know how ducks fly together and also the sounds that they make in flight as well as just some general characteristics of the game that you are hunting. Mallards typically you will be able to hear them. They will respond to the calls that you are making. Sometimes you can see the tips on the wings. This is a decoy but you can look at the color patches on ducks in flight as well. Just knowing how they look in flight. The head of a wood duck is a distinct marking and you can also hear the squeaking sound and how they fly so duck ID, knowing what the ducks look like in flight and also some of those characteristics of looking at head color, the patches, can give you clues to being able to identify what the species is that you are looking at.
