Video Transcript

"I’m Heather McCanna with expertvillage.com and in this clip I’ll be discussing gymnastics warm-ups, specifically the handstand. The handstand is a skill that’s a basic for anybody who wants to become a gymnast and is crucial to many of the skills performed on the for gymnastics apparatus. You begin by placing your good foot, which generally corresponds with your good writing hand in front of you. Leave all your weight on the foot that you’re standing on directly under your hip. Reach your arms upward and gradually shift your weight onto your front foot. Try and maintain a straight line from your hands to the foot that you’re now shifting your weight off of. Gradually lower your hands to the ground, continuingly bringing your hind foot upwards in the air. Eventually, you’ll place your hands on the ground, push off your supporting leg and bring your feet together in the air. This skill generally is performed slightly faster and you’ll try to achieve as close to vertical as possible. After you’ve come out of the handstand, you want to repeat the same process that you use to get into the handstand by splitting your legs and putting your weight one foot at a time. So after you’ve pushed off your foot and brought your hands together, you will split your feet and bring the same foot that was in front back to the ground first. After this, try and keep your hands directly above you and bring your weight back onto both feet. This is a handstand and you’ve just performed a basic gymnastics skill. "
