on 3/5/2009 Actually, proper bowling etiquette calls for you to check TWO lanes on either side of you. Although the lanes two over from you need not be as clear as those next to you, you should not be at the line releasing the ball at the same time as someone two lanes over.

"Hi, Glenn Soanes for expertvillage.com again, the next thing we want to talk about is the courtesy that goes along with bowling. You’ll have bowling on lines immediately adjacent to you and you want to let them bowl, they may be serious bowlers, they may be people out just having a good time but again like everything we do we should be courteous. When you go to pick up your ball, you’ve pickup your ball I would let Roger go bowl, make his spare, let him go first. At the point it comes your turn to bowl, you want to check the lane to your right, the lane to the left, if no body is on either lane it’s now your turn to bowl. "
