Most bowling centers offer two; there’s a bumper bowling lane for the younger, less experienced bowler and a regular lane. The bumper bowling experience for the younger child, the bumper prevents the ball from ending up in the gutter. So there’s always a positive reinforcement, I always knock down pins. The ball can go, hit as many bumpers as possible, knocks down a couple pins, I come back, I play again. On a regular play lane the gutters are wide open, the minute the ball goes in the gutter it’s not going to knock down any pins. When you come in you’ve picked your shoes, you’ve got your ball, you want to tell the people what type of lane you want to play on and they’ll be glad to set you up and help you out "
