Offensive Positions: Understanding American Football

"I am now going to explain to you the offensive positions in two different groupings. The first will be the offensive line positions and the second will be the skill positions. Offensive line positions consist of six positions; the first and the most important is the center position. The second group of positions will be what are called guards; there is a left and a right guard. These are normally blocking guards for running players and they also protect the quarterback who is behind the line of scrimmage. The third set or groups of positions are called tackles. The tackles actually line up on the outsides of the line of scrimmage and are probably the most important offensive line players because they protect the quarterbacks’ blind side, particularly the left hand tackle, which would be the outer most position on this line. The final position would be the tight end. The tight end would line up on the outside of either the right or the left tackle and this position would then be either a blocking back or would be an eligible receiver for a pass down field and those are the offensive line positions for beginning football."
