on 8/2/2008 It's too bad there's no "slow motion" video on this kick; it has to be done just right to kick with both feet off the ground, and to kick higher than knee level. Speaking of knees, practicing this kick can be hard on the knees. The younger students--especially the grade schoolers--in the dojang love this one, but some teens have said the numerous landings cause them to feel it in their knees later on. I'm in middle age, and have found that landings on the dojang floor, meaning a wooden one, aren't as hard on the knees as practicing at home in the basement, with its concrete floor under the carpet. My instructor permits me to jump forward and deliver the kick on the landing, which help me with coordination even if I'm not flashy, and one student who's a teenager has an alternate way for students with bad knees, more like a "skip" forward, then the kick. It's a good kick to rapidly propel you against an opponent--or the training bag.

Video Transcript

"Hello I am Geoff Sterling of Hollywood Soo Bahk Do and now we are going to show you a jump front kick. So in his one again you are going to start off here and again you are in a very comfortable position and you are stepping forward like you are sparring or like you are defending yourself. It is kind of like a skip and whichever foot is back, it doesn't matter whether it is your right foot or your left foot, whichever foot is back is going to extend up in the air and fly forward and that is going to get you airborne so you are going to jump off your front foot and it is going to be like this. This is the jump I am going to show you right now. Here is the jump and that is how you get in the air. You can just practice that a few times. You can just go right here and jump. So now the foot that is your front leg is going to turn into your back leg into the air and that is going to be your kicking foot. Again we are going to utilize that toe and it is going to curl back and that is going to be your striking surface and I am going to show you a jump front kick right now from start to finish. It is like this. I will show it to you one more time and I am going to show you on a profile on this bag right here and you can see it as striking someone."
