on 8/2/2008 I was introduced to a variation of the High Block sometime in the past, for a situation different from an overhead Hammer Fist, as Geoff demonstrates, or even someone coming at you with a club (blocking his striking arm, not the club). We practiced facing forward, as though in a bar, and the opponent was behind, but at a diagonal; the idea was that you're going to be turned round by him, and he's going to punch you right in the face. So, say the opponent behind you puts his left hand on your right shoulder and pulls your shoulder back, turning your body, so that his right-hand punch will come at your face. Duck your head by bending a bit at the waist, and do a right-hand High Block. When my friends and I practiced this, the incoming punch got caught in the High Block every time. Hopefully, nobody walks around on red alert every place s/he goes, but if you feel yourself being pulled like that, it's something that's not so foreign to condition/train for.

"Hi my name is Geoff Sterling and I am with Hollywood Soo Bahk Do and I am going to be showing you right now the high block. It is usually the second thing that you learn after the low block. It is a very basic move in Soo Bahk Do Moodi Kwon but it is an important block because someone might try to attack you and you won't be able to defend yourself. Basically as in preparation with the close here, except now when you cross in a low block you cross with your arm on top. This arm is straight and this arm is bent, that's a low block. High block you switch the arms around so it is the exact opposite. One arm is on top and the other arm is on bottom. The arm that is low here and is straight is going to block high. You want to make sure that you block at an angle and that the block is over your head. You don't want to block this way because if you do that you are going to get hit. Again the arm comes across this way so the arm with the leg that is back is going to go underneath and the arm of the leg that is forward is going to go on top, the arm that is bent is going to be straight and the arm that is forward is going to be bent. You want to make sure you are here, closed this way and step forward and opened. So you are here on your side and you want to be a little more fluid now and then open. This would be a high block so to show you how to do that from a side profile. From us at Hollywood Soo Bahk Do thank you for watching. "
