"One of the most frustrating parts of dealing with someone who has swam is if they let go of their paddle. This piece of equipment can cause a lot of hassle if you are trying to rescue a boat and the swimmer. So if you can encourage the person to keep hold of it, that would probably be best. However if you have to end up dealing with it, there are a couple of simple ways that make it a lot more efficient. One is to just tuck it length ways along your boat and then under your PFD, you can sort of lay over it to keep it there as you paddle. This does leave this back blade a little far so that it can catch some water; though often not the best situation. If you've got big hands and the paddles fit together nicely, then placing them together and holding them like that will give you the ability to paddle well with both paddles. If however they are at different angles or one is a bit short or particularly different shape, then that is not going to work so well. That leaves you with the final option which is the javelin toss and this is good if you've got a good throwing arm and you are just going to get the paddle into that eddy. Take the paddle that you are trying to rescue and get rid of it. "
