Aikido, the modern Japanese martial art, was developed between the 1920s and 1960s and emphasizes the spiritual and philosophical development of its students. This development of spirituality and philosophical belief is directly derived from Shinto and Buddhism. The name “aikido” comes directly from three Japanese characters that stand for “matching,” “spirit,” and “way.” Aikido is meant to distract or immobilize, not kill or permanently damage the attacker. Aikido fighters are thus demonstrating an effective but merciful response. Ueshiba (the Great Teacher of Aikido) declared “To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.”

"This Koshinage, or hip throw, is going to be done from ushiro tekubi dori, or two hands grabbed behind the back. Now Koshinage, while called hip throw, we have to really think of more than anything else, as a hip trip. We're going to use our hips really to break the balance more than anything else. From this technique, I'm going to lower my center. Roll my hands in, and then I need to get back out into Daniel. I'm going to come in here, just in this motion right here. As I do this, I'm going to continue to draw this hand across. Trap this hand, come out here, come around. I'm going to turn his body so you can see a little bit. I'm going to hook him underneath the belt right here. Step in, draw him across my hips, and basically just trip him on down to the ground. Once again, here, come up underneath, draw this hand here. Get the belt. Drive through, using my hips. Here, and for just for this purposes, I'm going to roll Daniel down. Just lay him down. Slide on down. Very difficult to do slow. Let's do it one more time now with a little mojo for you. Here, come underneath. Draw that arm. Trap here. Get the elbow. Get the belt back here, come in. Koshinage, hip throw from a two hand grab to the rear."
