However, the facts can not be denied, and unfortunately, women are targeted for a variety of violent crimes. The National College Women Sexual Victimization Study estimated that between one in four, and one in five college women experience completed or attempted rape during their college years. The study also shows that men tend to be major perpetrator of violent acts against women. While this sends chills up anyone's spine, it becomes painfully obvious that we have to protect ourselves. "7.For women's self defense and personal protection, one of the first things that we want to show you are wrist escapes, or escapes from grabs. The first thing we'll do is a wrist grab. In this situation right here, Theresa is grabbing me straight across. And this principle works for pretty much any grab. Now understand the, we are working just escapes right now. Ultimately, if you were to really begin to study personal protection and self defense, we'd have to do something else as well. They are not going to... I'm not going to break my hand loose and their going to go "Hey, great job!" They are going to continue to attack. However, let's focus on just getting loose first. When Theresa grabs me, I have two primary points of control; I have four fingers here, and I have one thumb. It's much easier for me just to go out over the thumb. I'm not going to physically force myself out, in the even that my attacker is really strong. I want to use my entire body and roll out over the thumb. Using my entire body, I break free. Now let's do that again. This time, I'll grab Theresa. I'm going to come in and grab her really hard, and she'll give a wrist escape for us. Let's do that one more time. Outstanding. So a good technique to understand in women's self defense and personal protection is a good wrist escape."
