Series Summary

Ice skates made of flattened animal bone were first used in prehistoric times to cross frozen bodies of water efficiently and conveniently. Today, skating is a great leisure activity and competitive sport. The animal bone has been traded in for metal blades and boots have been added instead of straps or thongs that were previously used to strap the skater to the skates. The metal blade allows the skater to glide on the ice easily, and if more friction is needed, the skater can dig in one of the blade’s edges as a sort of brake. By leaning and pushing, the skater can gracefully glide on the ice.

In this series of videos, you can learn more advanced ice skating techniques and spins. Advanced ice skating is usually reserved for the competitive arena, as is demonstrated by our expert. Warm-up with skating exercises such as forward swizzles, strokes and crossovers. Make this technique more difficult by trying it backwards! Get tips on stopping on the ice and learn about the basic edge in advanced figure skating. Watch as our expert teaches you how to spin on the ice. Try the more advanced spins when you are ready. Learn these and many more advanced ice skating exercises!

Video Transcript

"Hello my name is Dmitri Olympiev and I teach at Pines Ice Arena Skating School in Pembroke Pines, FL . I have been skating for over 25 years now. You can reach us on the web at www.pinesicearena.com and on behalf of expertvillage.com I would like to welcome you. Today I’m going to give you a few tips on how to become a good skater and we’re going to start with the first basic exercise called “Two-foot-glide.” Now when you’re a skater it’s very important to keep your back straight and the arms very stiff for the balance. Now we’re going to bend the knees, keeping the back straight and we’re going to go three steps just like we’re walking on the floor and we’re going to do two foot glide and we’re going to stand up on the knees. Now it’s going to look like this – One, Two, Three, Glide. Keep in mind my back stays straight the whole time – One, Two, Three, Glide. We’ll be right back."
