"Hi! This is David Dirks, managing director of Dirks Outdoors, on behalf of Expert Village. Today we are going to talk about fly fishing basics. So the basics of casting are actually really simply and it just requires practice, practice and more practice. But within a couple of hours, you should be able to do exactly what I am doing here. Now here's what happens here. Now I am going to lift the line off. I am going to go 10:00 o'clock, 2:00 o'clock. Now notice my rhythm. Once I go and I get my habit down to where I go, don't go farther than 10 or farther than 2. Now I get a rhythm; 1, 2, 3,1, 2, 3, 1,2, 3,1,2,3,1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3. Why is that important? Because the fly line in order to be able to cast appropriately, has to be able to get enough power to go out there and go forward. If you start whipping it like this, what happens is you will tend to just end up with a lot of line that is badly cast and you won't catch a whole lot of fish."
