DAVE TYLER: Pre-games for officials are an important time to get--make sure that the game is organized and ready to go. Usually that--in a 20 minute pre-game, at 12 minutes, the officials would get the captains and go over any situations on the floor with both teams and make sure we find out who the speaking captain is. At 10 minutes, the head referee would usually go and check the book and make sure that the team that's warming up have the appropriate numbers. Make sure that their uniforms are appropriate and make sure that there's no jewelry. Also what's important is to check the numbers on the book and make sure that they agree with the teams that are warming up. If during a game, a player comes into the game and his number is not on the book that would be a technical foul and two shots for the opposing team. So an official would go over and check the book, make sure that both teams have appropriate numbers, 12 on this team, 10 on the white team, 12 on the blue team, and make sure that all the numbers are coordinated with the teams that are--with the players that are on floor for each team. As the game goes on, the score, the official score is an important part of the basketball game because they may have to make sure they keep all the team fouls, all the personal fouls, time outs, score, running score. The clock would keep the score but the scorer also keeps a running score in case of power outage or something like that.
