"DAVE TYLER: Technical fouls can be called throughout a basketball game, before a basketball game even starts. When the officials come out to watch the teams warm up, in Michigan, no high school players are allowed to hang on the rim during warm-ups or even touch the rim. If a player would hang on the rim in warm-ups, the team would be assessed a technical foul before the game even started and would be assessed two shots and the ball. We also have technical fouls during the game. We have coach technicals; we have bench technicals; we have personal fouls by players. A technical foul, for instance, we have a push. The player pushes another player, we have a technical foul. We have two shots and the ball. A technical foul also counts towards the five fouls--personal foul that the five--each player gets in that game. So technical fouls are also counted as personal fouls. The mechanic on a technical foul again would be a whistle. We have a T, and then we would go the bench and give the player number, 13, push and two shots and the ball. The team that shoots the technicals also gets the basketball to the closest spot where the violation occurred. If we have a personal foul and a technical foul, the way we shoot those is the way they occurred. So we'd shoot the personal foul first, shoot those two shots; then we shoot the technical foul, shoot those two shots; and then it would be the team's ball out of bounds. So technical fouls can be called on coaches. Once a coach receives a technical foul, he is not allowed to get up off the bench. So let's say a coach is given a technical foul for being out of the coach's box, he then has to sit in his chair for the rest of the game until the game is completed. If a coach gets a second technical foul, he has to leave the premise and one of his assistants has to coach the team."
