"DAVE TYLER: Kicking is a violation. When the offensive team makes a pass and the defensive team attempts to stop the pass by kicking the ball, you have a violation. The proper mechanic for a kick would be: stop the clock, circle the foot and then point to the other way. One important rule about--one important part of the rule on kicking is that the kick has to be deliberate. If an offensive player passes the ball into a defender's leg and there is no kick--deliberate attempt to kick the ball by the defender in the official's judgement, you have no violation. Okay, here we going to look at two different situations. The first one is the dribbler is going to pass the ball and the defender is going to try to kick it to stop the ball from going where he wants it. Okay, there we have a deliberate kick by the defender. We'd have a whistle and then point this way, and then we'd have a violation. The other situation is that the passer passes it into the leg of the defender without any movement. In this situation, it's a loose ball. You have no violation and no whistle."
