" Hi my name is Dan and I'm here with Expert Village. Today I'm going to show you how to tie the reef knot or square knot. It is a very common knot. It has been long used in nautical applications for tying up sails which have been reefed or curled up. It is also use in the medical field or was use to tie off splints. There is a old saying that this goes right over left, left over right so we will see how that works. Take the right end of your line cross it over the left and take the left end of your line and cross it over the right. The reef knots is quiet secure but does not do well with bouncing. So if you are tying something onto a moving vehicle or a vessel this would not be the most secure knot. I can tie it one more time. Right over left, cross under, left over right. You'll know if you tied it correctly if your two working end comes out in the same side and the knot is symmetrical. This is the reef knot or the square knot."
