Using Dogs in Shotgun Hunting

"When they say flushing out an animal there is a lot that goes into it. Typically when you are flushing out an animal that means you are upland game hunting and one of the most popular upland game hunts is the pheasant hunt. What people use for that are dogs. There are two different types of trainings that you can give a dog to do that and there are dogs that are bred for both of those types of trainings. One of those dogs is a flushing dog and that is typically a lab or a golden retriever or a high energy dog like that that is really not sniffing out the animals but just running through the field and trained to run in a zig zag pattern so that it covers the area and flushes those birds to you and they fly out close to you. The other type of dogs are called pointers and there are all different sorts of points but their job is to sniff out those animals and point to them. So if this were a pheasant right here and it was on the ground and it is covered in bushes that dog is actually going to sniff that bird out, point to it with its foot and you will see its tail sticking straight out and that is when you will know it has got an animal to flush out. It will hold that animals there for you to walk up with your shotgun and then you can walk up and flush it out and shoot it out of the air."
