Using Bolt Action Rifles for Target Shooting: Practice Tips for the Gun Range

"Hi, my name is Chad. We’re talking about rifle and pistol shooting and we’re talking about different rifles that are available. We’re going to cover bolt actions, which is the most popular action probably in the world these days. Bolt action’s been in use for well over a hundred years at this point, and they come in different sizes and shapes and calibers. This one- a 22 long rifle- shoots a very small bullet. Basically, this one uses a detachable magazine. You put the rounds in the magazine, place the magazine into the rifle, and you close what’s called the bolt. And as you push that bolt closed, it strips off the round off the top of the magazine. You cam it shut, and it’s ready to fire. You pull the trigger, you work the bolt open, pull it back, and it’ll push out the old one, and as you close it, it pushes in a new one. Bolt actions are very popular because they are very reliable. They can house extremely powerful cartridges that will not be housed in anything else except maybe a single shot. This one for example uses a very, very large bullet. This is a 375 H and H. This has been used in Africa since 1912, I believe. And it’s purely a hunting rifle. Works the same way except it doesn’t have a detachable magazine, you just load the rounds in the top. Close it, fire, kick out the old one, put in the new one. But it’s the basic same. Another one is this rifle which is a copy of the World War II Mauser. This was actually made right after World War II. And it is almost- these two rifles are functionally exactly the same. This is what their soldiers used in those days, but it works the same way. Slip the bolt back and forth, put rounds in and kick out the old ones. And that’s basically the bolt action. It’s very reliable, very popular, and probably the most accurate-one of the most accurate actions you can get"
