"Hi, this is Bruce Lessels from Zoar Outdoor for expertvillage.com talking about camping. So if you’re hiking into your campsite or your campsite is somewhere where it’s a little bit remote you want to make sure that you know first how to get there and secondly where you are when you get there and how to get back. A couple of useful tools are a standard compass and this will tell you which direction your heading in and if you know which direction it is to get to your campsite you could go the reverse direction to get out. The other item that’s useful that a lot of people are using nowadays is a GPS or Global Positioning System and GPS is great for taking if you have coordinates for the campsite you’re going to. But ultimately none of those things are of any use unless you have a map and this is a standard USGS typographic map that shows elevations and topographic contours and also shows locations of streams and roads and trails. So with those three pieces of equipment you should be set to find your way in and find your way back."
