" Hi! This is Brian on behalf of expertvillage.com. Previously I showed you how to select an area for a campsite, build a pit for your fire ring, choose the rocks and construct the fire rings, and also seal the rocks together with the dirt that you removed from the pit. Now we are going to move on to an often overlooked but very important step, and that is clearing the area around the fire pit. As you can see here, there are a lot of pine needles and such that have dropped from the trees and this stuff is very flammable. What you want to do is remove it from the immediate area of your campsite. Despite the pains that we have taken to ensure that no embers jump out, some inevitably will. To reduce the risk of forest fire, we want to clear the pine needles away from the fire pit in a 10 foot radius around it, so let’s begin. As you can see, you can simply scrape the stuff, all the top layer, away from the fire pit and work your way out around the fire pit."
