"I'd like to talk about picking a location for your backpacking trip. It's up to the individual person on what kind of environment they like. The terrain: some people like mountains; some people like it flat. That's up to you, but when you do pick a location, you need to make sure that you not only look at the trail but also what's around the trail. If you're out there on the trail and you get hurt or need some assistance, you need to be able to find your way to civilization in a timely fashion. And knowing where the roads are along the trail or where the local towns are is really important. I had a friend, we were swimming in a slate canyon up in Maine, and she slipped, slammed her leg into a piece of rock, and it actually lodged in her shin. We had to actually bushwhack through, over to a road to get her some help."
