"Let's talk about using smelt, having smelt on a hand line. First thing we want to do is take that hand line, we have a little snap swivel here on the end, and we're going to take that through a perfection loop on a small snelled hook. Remember, the size of the hook that we're using for smelt are very tiny. We're going to take that tiny little hook and we're going to put a slab of minnow or smelt on the tiny hook and we're going to set it down the hole. Once again, you're going to measure down to the bottom, you're going to unwrap it until you hit the bottom. There's your slack line. And you're going to take it a couple wraps up to get the bullet weight off of the bottom. Now we're all set and boy have we got some action. The line is moving around, all around the hole and you know that there's something down there that's taking a look at us and pushing it around quite a bit. My goodness. So there are some fish down there that are pushing that slab around. We're not sure whether they're smelt or not, but the goal will be to bring them up to the surface."
