"Let's talk for a moment about a specific type of lure used for smelt. This is a smelt setup. You have a long leader here that is attached to a swivel. You can see the swivel right here at the top, and about ten inches of leader of it. On the bottom of that you have an egg weight. This is called an egg sinker, attached with a swivel that's built into it. And, off of each side of that, you have small leader connectors using brass hooks which are very typically good for crappie and smelt. On that brass hook you can see a wing that is tied there. It's a red wing. It's, basically, a feather or piece of plastic and, on top of that, you can see a small dot of fluorescent orange that looks like an eye. This is very gently jigged when you have a school of smelt underneath you. And, they will tend to feed, since smelt are carnivorous, will tend to feed on anything that looks like themselves."
