Series Summary

Diving is an interesting and sometimes death defying sport. Using acrobatics and technique, divers leap from varying heights with the intention of gracefully hitting the water. This test is typically judged by a lack of water displacement at entry, in which the diver would rise out of the water and be rewarded with thunderous applause. It's true that divers share the pool. However, they are reluctant to call themselves swimmers. Flying into the water with poise and nerves of steel is what tempts these thrill seekers and nay Sayers of gravity. Furthermore, they showcase their talents annually at the summer Olympic Games every four years in order to determine true champions. Competing in this sport takes guts and an overwhelming tendency to defy fear.

In this free video series a professional diving instructor Bobby Labrew will show you several aspects of backward springboard diving. You'll learn the dives incorporated in this group, such as: the back dive pike and the back 1 1/2 dive pike. Bobby will teach you transitions and maneuvers to ensure that you know the right positions for performing these dives. In the end you'll witness a few short demonstrations and be well on your way towards perfecting the backward dives in springboard diving.

Video Transcript

"Hey, I'm Bobby Larew. For all you people out there that want to learn how to do stuff backwards off the diving board, that's what I'm here to tell you, OK. So, we're talking about the back group right now. I want to teach you 2 dives in the next couple of video clips. I'm going to teach you a back dive pike, and I'm going to teach you a back 1 1/2 somersaults pike, alright. For both of those, you're going to start on the end of the board, OK. My back is going to be to the water, my feet should be hanging off the board about 1/2, 1/2 my foot should be hanging off the board, OK. That's why it's called the back group. From there, my head is looking straight down at the bolts on the end of the board, OK. My arms are down at my sides. My legs are locked out. I'm not slouching, OK, because if I slouch, I'm liable to fall off the board. So, I want to make sure that my legs are locked out. I want to make sure that my shoulders are up and back, it gives me a nice looking posture, body line standing on the end of the board. Making sure that my elbows are locked. My hands are pointed straight down to the floor. Making sure that I'm not moving or twisting in any way, because when I do my back, I want to be able to stay at a nice, easy position to prepare for the dive, OK. So, back group, start with your back to the water, eyes facing down at the bolts at the bolts on the end of the board. That's how you should start."
